In exchange for a capital investment in one or more financial instruments, the investor is usually paid a cash consideration.

What is a financial instrument?

A financial instrument is a contract characterized by the exchange of an asset (in most cases money) against a future good (in most cases still money).

Please note: means of payment, such as cash, credit cards and checks, are not considered financial instruments.
